The way to more equitable and integrated mental health care

visual with text saying "position paper"

Today, one in seven people worldwide lives with a mental disorder. Yet, between 76 and 85% of those affected in low- and middle-income countries receive no care at all.

Furthermore, fragility and crisis contexts, including armed conflict, gender-based violence, forced displacement and natural disasters are major contributors to the worsening burden of mental health disorders. The increasing impacts of climate change further exacerbate this burden, particularly in the most vulnerable settings.

In Burundi, Niger and Palestine, Enabel integrates mental health into primary healthcare, strengthens the capacities of local teams and engages communities in the fight against stigma. An approach grounded in human rights and driven by national actors.

This position paper sets out our approach, the lessons learned and the recommendations Enabel puts forward to build mental health systems that are more equitable, better integrated and genuinely accessible to all.
