Co-creating innovative skills development solutions

As investments from the European Union to African countries increase, national economies can seize the opportunity to further support job creation, economic empowerment and poverty alleviation at the local level. To make this a reality, Enabel co-implements VET Toolbox with the British Council, Expertise France, GIZ and LuxDev.

VET Toolbox supports 11 Sub-Saharan African countries in meeting the skills demand of private investments through targeted skills development and Vocational Education and Training (VET) programmes, to create decent job opportunities and improve the lives of people in local communities

Uganda: A pilot project for impactful education and digital transformation

Enabel in Uganda and VET Toolbox teamed up to develop a digital solution to improve access to Vocational Education and Training (VET) in countries where it is often limited by factors such as geographical remoteness and lack of resources and equipment.

Through a partnership with private partner Wal-E Visual, we developed a pilot project aiming to advance the soft and hard skills of participants and draw key lessons for the VET community regarding the digital transformation of skills development systems in Africa.

35 educators from 7 Vocational Education and Training (VET) institutions across Uganda were introduced to the use of Virtual Reality (VR).

“I enjoyed the virtual reality experience a lot – what I saw was very different. At the institution, we usually buy training materials, and a lack of materials can hinder effective training. Now with this virtual reality, a student can sit at the computer and do everything with virtual fabric, significantly reducing the cost. (…) I believe that with this technology, we can achieve a lot.” – Bogere Paul, Uganda Technical College Kyema

“Virtual Reality will help boost the retention capacity of learners while saving time and money. Through collaboration with experts and developers, we will be able to develop programmes/applications for effective interactive training.” – Isingom Yoroboam, Kasese Youth Polytechnic

Democratic Republic of Congo: Supporting European investments in strategic sectors

To achieve sustainable and inclusive economic growth, prepare their workforce for the jobs of tomorrow and compete in the global economy, companies must make sure to strengthen and retain their human capital.

Building on the achievements of the EDUKAT programme and in the framework of VET Toolbox, Enabel supports European companies operating in the DRC in the sectors of construction, transport and logistics, hospitality, and digital technology with developing and promoting local human capital.

This project was officially launched during the ‘Salon des Métiers et de la Formation 2022’ organised by the Federation of Congolese Enterprises of Haut Katanga in Lubumbashi, where we hosted a panel discussion on the importance of human capital development. Participants from European companies, as well as Congolese  public and private training structures, and support, investment, and political and administrative entities, joined this fruitful discussion.
