Cybersecurity for a secure and inclusive digital society

visual with text saying "position paper"

In 2024, an unprecedented global computer failure paralysed the aviation, healthcare, banking, media and commercial sectors, resulting in losses of over $5 billion. In Africa, rapid digitisation has improved access to information and basic services, but has also brought a sharp rise in cyberattacks: in 2023 alone, these increased by 23%, targeting both critical infrastructures and individuals, and deepening inequalities, particularly for women.

To address these challenges, Enabel adopts a multi-dimensional approach: its action is based on technical and strategic partnerships with Belgian institutions, as well as local and international actors, and on concrete initiatives to combat cybercrime, strengthen cybersecurity, raise awareness of cyberhygiene and promote digital rights.

Enabel’s approach also includes combating disinformation and paying particular attention to gender issues: indeed globally, 38% of women have experienced online violence – a figure that is likely underestimated due to under-reporting.

Read our position paper to explore Enabel’s key insights and recommendations for building a safer, more inclusive and sustainable digital future.
