Digital rights manual for beginners
To ensure that everyone can understand their digital rights, Enabel has revised its Digital Rights Manual for Beginners – a practical introduction to digital rights.
Originally developed for the Belgium funded Digital for Women and Girls project, the manual has been adapted to make it relevant and accessible across the African continent and beyond, and include the latest emerging issues on digital rights.
Written with all citizens in mind – whether they are new to the subject or already engaged in digital or human rights work – the manual explains what digital rights mean in their everyday lives, and how they can advocate and assert them better.
It covers what digital rights are and why they matter, with further chapters on freedom of expression in the digital space, the basics of online safety, privacy and cybersecurity, as well as inclusion and access to digital tools. It also looks at how to engage with policymakers and stakeholders, explores emerging technologies, and knowledge-sharing and community-based digital empowerment.
Finally, the manual provides a glossary, a selection of useful tools and platforms, and five illustrative case studies from across the continent.
