Niger
The Belgian Development Cooperation has been active in Niger for some 50 years. Our support aims to improve the living conditions of the Nigerien population through access to social protection, food security and sustainable management of natural resources and ecosystems.
Health
Good health is a basic condition for participating to the economy and contributing to a country’s development. We support Niger in facing the challenge of delivering accessible quality health care to the whole of its population.
We do so by supporting several components of the health system and by achieving inclusive social protection through the introduction of quality health insurance. Therefore, we support the Ministry of Public Health at the strategic and operational levels in implementing its Universal Health Coverage policy.
We ensure that earlier projects on medical data and the maintenance and quality assurance of care are further continued and we also introduce innovations, in particular on the promotion of reproductive health and the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence, and related human rights.
Education
Education remains one of the Nigerien government’s top priorities. In a context of rapid population growth, the challenges are immense, both in terms of access to schooling and in terms of the quality of education.
We aim for more girls to be in school, to succeed in their studies and to be gender equality champions. By attending school and getting a good education, girls have more freedom of action and more means of participation and can influence decision-making at all levels.
In future, we aim to develop a model that is adapted to the local situation and provides better, more equitable and inclusive schooling.
Entrepreneurship and employment of youths and women
One of our objectives is to contribute to better food security, resilience and increased income for Nigerien citizens, particularly through the sustainable development of value chains in the livestock sector.
Together with our partners, we are working to improve the quality of and access to key services, whether in terms of animal health, technical and entrepreneurial advice, or financing, which entrepreneurs need to professionalise their activity. While paying attention to existing networks, we aim to strengthen the creation of added value and particularly of jobs for young people.
Climate change
Our objective is to improve the integrated management of natural resources and to sustainably restore the natural ecosystems of the Sahel. We do so in the context of the fight against desertification and climate change. Priority is given to strengthening the capacity of the Sahel’s populations to address the vulnerable conditions of their environment.
First and foremost, support focuses on the promotion of sustainable agro-pastoral systems, the restoration of degraded land, the sustainable management of agro-pastoral land and the improvement of land governance and rural conflict prevention.

In Niger, many people live in remote and sometimes insecure areas. The road to the nearest health centre is often very long, so people do not go there easily. Enabel and its partners in Niger worked out a solution.
